Gentoo is now building on the second test machine.
Machine: 900MHz Athlon Thunderbird, 768MB RAM, 230GB disk, dual boot with Windows XP.
Gentoo: Rev. 1.4, full build from stage 1.
I kicked off the stage 1 build last night at about 2300. It was finished when I awoke this morning at 0500 and I’ve started stage 2. Stage 2 is progressing quickly as well. From all appearances, I should be done with the install before the new backup motherboard arrives this afternoon. Then I’ll redo the install from scratch using SMP (dual processors).
I still have a bit to learn befor I turn Gentoo loose on a production machine. Still, it looks like a great way to build an optimized system with just the software installed that one wants and needs. I am sure I’ll have more to say.
Later: It took about 12 hours to build Gentoo linux on the 900MHz T-bird. That was about what I expected. I’ve stowed that motherboard and the drive I used to build the system and started work on another install.
